Hiking in Connemara

Connemara is a true paradise for hikers

The impressive Twelve Bens, vast boglands, sparkling lakes, and the rugged Atlantic coastline create a unique setting for unforgettable walks and mountain adventures. Whether you prefer a gentle stroll or a challenging hike, you’ll experience breathtaking views, wide open spaces, and nature at its very best.

Diamond Hill (Letterfrack)

A must-do! One of Ireland’s best hiking trails, located in the National Park. There are two routes to choose from (an easy loop and a summit trail), and the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Our tip afterwards: Be sure to stop by Veldon’s Seafarer in Letterfrack – it’s our absolute favorite pub in the area. Perfect for warming up and refueling after your hike!

The Sky Road Walk

Drive to the car park at the highest point of the Sky Road and take a stroll from there to enjoy the very best views over the Atlantic.

Clifden Castle Walk

An easy and romantic walk from the edge of town to the ruins of Clifden Castle.

Omey Island (Tidal Walk)

At low tide, you can walk across the seabed from Claddaghduff to reach this unique island. Be sure to check the tide times in advance!

The Twelve Bens (Na Beanna Beola)

The Inagh Valley Drive (R344)

Our top tip!

Drive this scenic road that winds its way between the Twelve Bens and the Maumturk Mountains. It’s one of the most picturesque drives in Ireland, passing lakes (like Lough Inagh) and boglands – perfect for photo stops!

For Experienced Hikers

The peaks are challenging and often only suitable for seasoned walkers (e.g., the Glencoaghan Horseshoe).

For regular hikers

we recommend Connemara National Park (Diamond Hill), which offers the best views of the Twelve Bens.
